FRIENDS OF NORTH CENTRAL HEALTH CARE MISSION The mission of Friends of North Central Health Care (“Friends”) is to develop, manage, and designate charitable support to meet the needs of persons served by the facilities. HISTORY OF THE AUXILIARY/”FRIENDS” The Auxiliary was established in 1950 as a community response to assist patients in the Marathon County Asylum for the Insane and Sunnyvale Infirmary. Fourteen compassionate ladies decided these residents needed more than county funding would allow, and so they received permission from the superintendent to form an auxiliary. The first meeting was held on September 13, 1950. These ladies, for no personal or family gain, for they didn't even have relatives being treated at these facilities, met with women's clubs, civic groups, and individual church clubs to appeal for things like hospital gowns sewn from worn shirts and curtains for a bit of privacy. As larger, more costly items were needed, such as oxygen tanks, or a steam table so food could be served hot, an annual fundraiser, consisting of a card party and homemade food sale (bakery, canned goods, etc.) began. Over the last half century this, along with many other fundraisers, has grown and many patient needs have been met. In 2003 the Auxiliary changed their name to Friends of North Central Health Care. The “Friends” goal was, and remains to this day, to be an advocate for the residents, and to raise funds with which to purchase items not obtainable through the normal budget process. THE “FRIENDS” TODAY Today we are 300 members strong (consisting of both ladies and gentlemen). Our current list of fundraising activities includes: • Annual Card Party and Bazaar • Books Are Fun Book Sales • Heartfelt Gifts Gift Shop • Tree of Life Display Proceeds go to the thousands of inpatient residents and outpatient clients that are now treated through some facet of North Central Health Care (NCHC). NCHC is comprised of: Marathon Health Care Center, Mount View Care Center, Premiere Recovery Services, Developmental Disability Services, Child & Adolescent Services, Birth to 3 Program, Community Support Program, Mental Health Outreach, Clubhouse, Vocational Services Program, and offices in Langlade and Lincoln Counties. Some of our more recent purchases/projects include: • Two gazebos-One on MVCC and one on NCHC grounds for residents to enjoy (Many thanks to member/volunteer Bill Pusheck for his labor) • Wheelchair glider swing for Bissell Street Group Home • Aquatic parallel bars for therapy pool • Patient lifts for MVCC nursing home • Reference books for staff library • Funding towards several aviaries • Sensory activity devices for developmentally disabled • Horticulture equipment and projects With a deep commitment towards the care of clients and patients, we turn that care into effective action. Please join us! “Friends” have five regular meetings each year. They are held on the first Thursday of March, May, July, September and November at the Health Care Center. Typically, we have lunch served at 11:30 am, followed by our business meeting at 12 noon. Speakers from various departments of NCHC bring members up to date on the latest aspects of care and patients needs for that particular area. (Special committee member meetings are held at additional times and dates based on need and committee member's availability/ schedule.) Please be our guest and attend our next regular meeting! Four issues of the Volunteer News are mailed out annually, bi-monthly. They include notes from our President, updates on upcoming activities, events and fundraisers, pertinent NCHC news, lists of patient and client needs, and inspirational notes and notes of thanks for all that members and volunteers do.
