Become a Volunteer Legal Guardian with North Central Health Care

Are you looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in someone’s life? North Central Health Care’s Adult Protective Services (APS) department is seeking compassionate individuals to serve as volunteer legal guardians. This is a unique opportunity to support individuals in need by acting as their legal advocate and decision-maker.

What Is a Legal Guardian?

Legal guardians are appointed by the court to assist individuals, known as "wards," who may be unable to make certain decisions due to cognitive impairments, developmental disabilities, neurocognitive disorders, or mental health challenges. Guardianship focuses on managing financial, social, and estate-related matters for the ward while advocating for their best interests.

Key Details About Volunteering

  • Volunteer Role: Guardians are considered volunteers but receive a stipend of $80 per month per ward to offset expenses.
  • Commitment: Volunteers commit to serving as a guardian for at least two years and are expected to meet with their ward approximately four times per year.
  • Counties Served: Wards reside in Marathon, Lincoln, or Langlade County.
  • No Physical Care Required: Guardians are not responsible for providing physical care. The role focuses on decision-making, advocacy, and support.
  • Eligibility: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Employees of North Central Health Care can also serve as guardians with no conflict of interest.

Responsibilities of a Legal Guardian

  • Managing financial matters such as Social Security benefits, estate planning, and other financial decisions.
  • Assisting with legal and administrative needs related to the ward’s well-being.
  • Acting as an advocate for the ward’s rights and ensuring their needs are met.
  • Maintaining regular contact with the ward and attending court-mandated meetings or reviews as needed.
